This picture was taken on the passenger ferry from Groningen to Schiermonnikoog. You can only buy a return ticket and I think it was around 11Euros each, not much. It was the first day of this boats service as it had been renovated and beautifully too. You will have to be one of the first on to get a window seat with table.
The journey takes about 45 minutes and when you arrive you will find bike hire at the port, but you will also find better bike hire places within the village itself. We took the 3Euro bus to the village and picked up some great bikes with gears and hand brakes for little money.
The Island is 16KM wide and 4 or 5 KM in width, so its an easy bike experience even if it is a bit windy.
